5 gallon salt tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yes a 5 gallon can be done.... do I recomend it.... HELL NO!!! Two reasons, 1 your gonna wanna go bigger withing 3 months and 2 if you even sneeze near a tank that small your gonna run into problems.

In a tank that small you can keep some gobies and a damsel. No clowns, tangs, triggers or any nice fish that you always see at pet stores which actually sucked you in in the first place.

That small you serioulsy add a little to much salt and your in for trouble, a little to much food, your in trouble. Serioulsy I wouldn't recomend anything less then a 29 gallon.

For equipment.... I recomend a lb per gallon of live rock only because it will make your life a trillion times easier. If you spend the money and get lb per gallon you will not need any filters what so ever, just some powerheads to move current around and thats it. You need a protein skimmer which will help remove organic waste from the water. You do not need to dish out crazy money for euros and all that. I have a 150 gallon reef and I only use a Coralife that is rated for a 65 gallon tank. People believe in crazy skimming but I don't. My tank is heavily stocked with inverts and fish and I have 180 lbs of live rock and that small skimmer and never ever had anything die on me yet.

kool i have an extra 55 sitting in my garage, so what would i need to do to convert it to saltwater???

umm marine salt would be the first thing you would need.
then probably a protein skimmer.
some live sand some live rock.

i would do a FOWLR (fish only with live rock) setup. let me know if this is wrong, but i heard if you used copper in that tank then it will leak out. if this is true then doing coral in a tank with copper will be a very expensive disapointment. like i said, im not sure if that is actually true, but it helps to know the history of the tank first. aside from that 50+ lbs of LR and LS will help you get started easily. i would spend the extra money on a refractometer, although the cheap Deep Six readers are fine. those items read SG (specific gravity). after you have all that in there i would invest in a protein skimmer. if your doing the FOWLR setup then you dont really need to worry about RO water. using tap water will be fine. when everything is said and done you need to research the type of fish you want to put in the tank. it should be an easy task aslong as you take your time and do your research. good luck, and everyone let me know if that copper problem is a myth or not!

The copper thing is probs a myth although im not sure. Where would the copper be in the empty tank?? As long as its cleaned well it should be fine.
