I have 5 freshwater tanks (200, 110, 40, 15, 10), my question is how should I pepare so I don't lose any of the occupants? I was thinking of doing water changes on all the tanks about an hour or 2 after the power is out, and possibly not feeding for a day prior to cut down on pollutants. Any advice that someone could render would be of great help... Also will all my benficial bacteria die in that period of time? Should I keep it submereged?

Throw your filter media in the tank and do a gravel vac before and after the outage. Do you have a battery air pump? If not, leave the lid open on the tanks and scrape a fish net handle over the surface of the water every 10-30 minutes or so. This will help give the fish oxygen and will release co2.

I had an unexpected 5 hr outage last week..............I had no battery powered air pumps...........so I just hoped that the power would come on before certain death if this crap lasted all night...........and it did..........and no deaths..........so far, most fish are hardy!!...... breaking the surface of the water in your tank will help though.........might i suggest a watering can!!! good luck man!!:D

I've seen fish live in bags longer than that. And my brother in-law turns his equip off everynight. I don't do it. but he is into habitat and ythings like that. Not that i am an expert but i think you'll be ok. Long as there are no temp flux.

This si what I did when my power went out. I drove to walmart and picked up a power inverter, I came home, took the battery out of one of my cars and placed it in the living room, plugged in 3 of my air pumps to it, ran some air line to each tank and connected the battery "very very easy". Thats it, power for 5 hours and then some!

I do not know how to link from another thread. Here is my post, cut and paste, from a simular thread:

During a power outage, neighbors were amaised how fast I got my power generator running and said "Boy, you sure are worried about your refridgerater and your family."
Refridgerator?!? This generator is for my fish tanks!. We got candles for us.....want some ice cream before it melts?

Howdy,

Clean your filters! The one main problem with short-term power outages is dead of the bacteria and resulting formation of toxins in the filter. That gets flushed into the tank when the power comes back on. Having clean filters can minimize that risk.
