one of the neat properties of water is that it is less dense at 4 degrees than it is at zero degrees.
this is why ice floats. the water is frozen (zero degrees) yet instead of being more dense that liquid water (so it sinks) it is actually more dense because of the way the hydrogen and oxgyen atoms are configured (via the dipolar nature of water).. it has a slightly negatively charged end, and a postively charged end. the chemistry means that the soild ice becomes less dense which is weird..
