5' Tank Problem

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I moved an AGA 180 once, up 7 cement steps, into first floor of the house, and down about 15 skinny steps into my parents basement with the help of 2 other guys.

Maybe I'm not that strong but let me tell you it was KILLER!

For weeks it felt like I pulled the muscles in both arms below your biceps in the bends of your arms, that was like 10 years ago.

Moved my AGA 150 up to 2nd floor in apartment with just one other guy, that was brutal also.

Maybe there is something to be said about Acrylic tanks.

That's a pic of the tank. You cant really see the panels of mirrors as it's facing the other side. As you can see, it's made of really thick glass.

so how did you move ot to that location?

We loaded it into my friend's car and after that we had 5 people, including myself to unload it and bring it up to where it is now via the elevator.

The problem is the stairs down.

That's one heavy tank. It's the 42" height. and the need for super-thick 3/4" glass panels, that makes it so heavy.

I moved a 150G Tall (48" x 24" x 30") down a set of basement steps with my son. If the 150G was a standard 72" tank length, it would have been much easier, because the glass panels are thinner (lighter). To get it down the steps, we slide it over the steps. I had the dangerous position of being in front of it. My 230 lbs of body weight was just barely able to keep the tank from crashing down on me. If I had slipped or stumbled on a step, that would have been the end of me.

In hind sight, we should have tied a rope around the tank and wrapped the end of the rope around a plank in the door way. That way, my son could have held the rope and let it move a few inches at a time.

Good luck and be careful.

Problem is, my camera battery is dead and I'm too lazy to replace them now.

Ahhh...there's the problem.

All kidding aside, that tank is a beast. Notice, everyone, that the bottom has no trim and appears to be flush. That would make it incredibly hard to keep a grip on it. At least you only have to go DOWN stairs. Put it on some cardboard and get your five friends to help slide it down. Don't let it get away from you. Also, those suction cups on ebay are only rated to hold 80 lbs each. That sounds like broken toes to me. Good luck and post some pics when you are done so we can feel good about having helped so much:shakehead
