[edit] Steps

  1. Take a square piece of yellow crepe paper (other paper will also do). Crumple a ball of newspaper and place in the middle of the square piece.

  2. Fold the crepe paper from all sides to cover the ball of newspaper and stick with tape. This will be the spider's body.
  3. Keep this aside and take a long strip of orange coloured paper 3 times the width of the spider's body. At the shorter ends of the rectangle strip, cut small slits. This will make the legs of the spider.

  4. Stick the strip of paper that make the legs on the taped side of the body.

  5. Draw a mouth and two eyes on the untaped side of the spider's body. Use felt pens.

  6. Fix an elastic or rubber band at the top of the head with tape to make the spider jump. Catch onto the other end of the elastic band, move your hand up and down, and there you have a jumping spider!

[edit] Tips

  • Take a small measurement of paper to make the spider extra cute.
  • Don't let the kids do the taping part if you want the spider to be neat, but if you let your kids do the taping, your spider will have unique characteristics that will be unique to that spider and your child will develop greater motor skills to take on those tougher skills later in life.
  • You can change the colour of the paper according to your child's wish.

I hope this isn't a derail... since I'm responding to one of the "wacky facts".

If man evolved from monkeys and apes, why do we still have monkeys and apes?
...

Man didn't evolve from monkeys. That's the one thing that really irks me. And yes, I KNOW people don't know any better, but that's why I'm here.

Man evolved from a common ancestor, a different kind of ape. Science suggests that it may have been early chimpanzees.*** So, if we came from chimpanzees, why are there chimpanzees still around today? Many times evolution occurs after two or more groups of a same species become separated because of geography barriers, or other barriers, such as temporal, behavioral, and ecological changes. Once these two groups become separated, they stop exchanging genetic information, and each group can evolve in different directions. If one of the chimpanzee groups was well adapted to it's environment, there would be no pressure on it to change. However, if the other group was in conditions different to what it was evolved for, there would be pressure on it to evolve, which in the end resulted in humans.

(This is by far an oversimplification of how evolution works, but I don't feel like typing down a 5 page essay. :grinno:)

***RELEVANT FACT: One of the greatest obstacles in proving that humans were also apes, and closely related to the other great apes, was the fact that the other great apes have 24 pairs of chromosomes, while we only have 23. It was later discovered, however, that human chromosomes 2 and 4 were actually created from the merging of chimpanzee chromosomes, solving the mystery of where the extra pair went.

Anyways...

Despite being advised to go under a bridge to be safe from tornadoes, did you know that doing so is even more dangerous? The small space under a bridge actually accelerates the tornadoes air as it goes through it, kind of like putting your thumb on the tip of a hose and making the water shoot out faster and farther.
