50% Water Change Safe?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yes if you are doing regular water changes in general. also since it can be hard to match your tank temp exactly your better off being a few degs colder then warmer ime. i do 50% or more 2x a week and would do more if i had the time.

i go by my nitrate levels on unplanted tanks... ie if my nitrates go above 20ppm its time for a water change... after a week or two of water changes and cheching you can get a good idea of what you need.... you ahve a heavy bioload... youll liekly need to do 50% or more regularly to keep your water good.

You have a hefty bio load seeing as ur aros are 20"+!!! If you run a sump you can use that to buffer the new water with no ill effects, that being said what are your current water parameters?? If your nitrates are under 20ppm then wait till they rise to 25-30ppm and imo thats when your particular bio load is reached and changing water is the only way to bring that number down!

That is assuming your tank is even cycled!

I do anywhere from 60-80% daily on my juvie tanks and 98% on my adult Discus tanks so 50% a week is not a problem! Like others stated check your nitrates to determine were you bio load is.

With the execption of my planted tanks, I don't do anything less then 50% on all my tanks and this is every 4 to 7 days.

Yeah if im doing a water change i feel gulity if i do less than 50 percent. My larger tanks get a min of 50% a week but if im not too busy i will give them 2 75percenters a week.

Water changes imo are one of the most beneficial things any fish owner can do. Others disagree but its how i manage my fish.

thanks everyone i did the 50% and everything seems to be fine

In my largest tank I do about 45% water changes every 5 days and 50% twice a week in the smaller/growout tanks. I always clean the gravel in my largest tank though, all the others are bare bottom.

On my 240 I do 60% once a week and 15 gallons/day. The 15 gallons is to get rid of the poop that sits on the sand. The bioload in my 150 is super light cuz my jar is only 6.5", so i just change 40% once a week.
