Awesome tank....and finaly someone else using MH for FW. I am setting up a 240long 8x2x2 and I have two 400w MH that I never got to use on my reef tank I was trying to set up (long story). Anyway My plan is to put the 400's 24" off the water so it covers the whole tank. My reflectors are kinda like yours but that are the smooth mirror finish and 19x19. So what bulbs are you using...what K...how long you run them...and algae problems...are you running just the MH's?

Thanks

The tank is next to a sliding door that I leave the blinds open on so the tank first brightens as the sun rises, than the 4 HO 420nm actinic lights come on around 10:30am, (its 3 now that one of the blue lights stopped working and I replaced it with a 5700K I had laying around). The MH's come on at 430 pm and are only on for 4 hrs. I love the look of the MH's but the polys prefer less light so that is why they are only on for a few hours. The bulbs are Ushio 10 K. The MH's turn off at 830 pm, I usually feed the polys between 9 and 10. The blue lights turn off at 10:30pm.

I dont have a "problem" with algae so to speak. I do have to scrape the inside glass once every 2 weeks or so to keep it clean but i dont consider it a problem. I am going to try putting some barley straw pellets in the over the tank filter to see if that eliminates the algae. I will update the thread with the results.

great looking tank!!!!!!!!!!!! we would like some pic during feeding time please thanks

I will do my best. I can get the most activity when feeding pellets, but the most interesting shots come when they are getting live food. I have the camera out on the counter in hopes to get some good shots but I seem to always be just a little too slow!

Thanks for the info. I wont have any polys in this tank just a hand full of some regular jumbos like a mag, texas, feste, gt things of that nature. I was going to try to run the MH's for about 7hrs. I will have a 36w UV on the tank so the water dont turn green and maybe somke plants. Scraping the glass every 2 weeks isnt bad at all!

So you run the actnics with the MH...hows the color of the fish like that...how is it with just the 10k's?

The fish in there now arent very colorful to begin with, so I dont think the actinics are helping them any. I dont notice a difference if its just the MH's that are on. I just wanted something that would light up the tank so I could see them but not make them hide, they were on sale for like $9 bucks a piece when I got them.
