sup to the people in here, im planning a african cichlid pond and im wondering whats the most effective way to heat a pond to 80F for 5000 gallons in winter, im planning solar water panels for spring and summer and an electric 11,000 watt heater in winter. this is going to be in a small greenhouse (taking half the space) i need a better idea thats cheap in operating costs. also, a good kind of filtration for this thats cheap but effective

Welcome to MFK.

The 11,000 watt heater is what my uncle uses on his 9000gl pond and that works really good, not sure if there is a cheaper way than that.

For filtration, just buy some big rubbermaid tubs and convert them into filters.

ok, thanks, i really cant have some huge ass tub tucked away somewhere cuz i want this to look nice and the planned filtration is already big, im planning 3 via aqua 8000 2200gph pumps since i can get em for like 50 bucks each, a hayward star clear 50 square foot micron filter, a 30w UV sterilizer that i have running on the 250 gallon cichlid pond (the fish goin into the 5000) the hayward 11,000 watt inline heater and probably a massive undergravel filter 2 feet deep into the pond so i can clean it during water changes and a skimmer, ill probably make it 4 pumps. What can i use to raise the ph to 8.0?

I cant remeber what it is exactly my uncle uses, but I believe he make up plaster of paris. Puts it in dixie cups, and lets it harden in there, then you peel the cup off and put it in the water, it slowly dissovles and raises the Ph. I will find out tomorrow for you for sure, but I believe that is what it is.

hmm, could some kind of rock allow my water to raise the ph and hardness? like something similar to coral substrate but not as expensive?

Crushed coral or araganite is all I can thing up, besides buying a PH buffer african cichlids. Might be able to buy it by the gallons on thatfishplace.com

i thought rocks like texas holey rock and lace rock can raise ph because to buy sand for that much pond is like a couple tons and way too many zeros

anybody got ideas for additions? to it, im aiming for a target amount of 400 cichlids.

my tanks:
250 gallon Malawi/Tanganyika pond
6 eye biter fry
11 yellow labs 1 adult and 10 fry
9 auratus 1 adult and 8 fry
6 snowy white socolofi fry
7 kenyi fry(i hope these dont die i got bad luck with em)
6 white cichlids dont kno what they are
6 ob zebra fry
7 rusty
1 borley
8 burundi frontosa
8 red zebra
7 cobalt blue 1 adult and 6 medium fish

87 fish(i think theres more like 100 now)

50 gallon tropheus tank
4 ikola tropheus
12 molorio reds
6 dubosi

I would get any preditory cichlids you can find, just so they get some size in your pond vs all of the malawi mbuna.
