Lowes had it listed on their website for about 15. a tube. I think shipping was free. You might look into that and do some testing!

I just might... after all the testing your thread already saved us, it's worth one more test or two to get to the bottom of this and find out what's gonna stick to what.. lol

funny that it's been a week and the zavlar reps have not returned my email with some Qs about their product... they have a head office very close to me... hmph.. anyhow, plans are almost complete and I'll keep you updated hopefully with pics... I know how pics are everything. :)

thanks for the replies Ross, very appreciated!

ok, thanks again. now it's just a matter of if the 3m stuff will adhere to the zavlar.

If you follow the plan I wrote out for you before this won't be an issue. The epoxy will provide a waterproof "bridge" between your zavlar and adhesive, so the 3m doesn't need to adhere to the zavlar (or vice versa)

Here it is again:

1. coat the window frame and a few extra inches with a few layers of good quality 2 part marine epoxy (eg. West Systems 105)

2. glue in your window with butyl rubber, polyurethane caulk, 3M 5200 (probably the best option,s since Zalvlar should stick to it) or regular silicone (probably the worst option since Zavlar won't stick to it, but should still work since it's being applied over the waterproof epoxy layer).

3. paint the rest of the tank with zavlar, applying over your epoxy strip and up to your adhesive layer.

Here's a picture to illustrate the idea (Pond Coat = zavlar):

That being said, I'm all for testing so if you want to get some zavlar and test whether it will adhere to 3m 5200 (and the other way around) please go ahead. I (and others I'm sure) would be interested to see the results.

Thanks for the replies guys... not sure what kinds of marine epoxies I can get here in Canada, but am going to find out. Also almost definitely gonna use the 3m 5200 for the viewing window since I hear it's better than silicone.

I'll see what I can do about a test when I have both products (3m, zav) cuz looks like I'll be using that combo regardless whether or not I need the epoxy.

Remember, the reps are not going tell you their product will do anything that will leave them liable. It's like we all use GE1 silicone but there is no way GE will say it can be used underwater on a tank.

yes, I'm aware they don't wanna be liable, I just wanted to know if they knew what it sticks to and what it won't..
