50gl tank lf advice and wtb fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Welcome to MFK!! My advice would be to check out some of the stickys here in each forum pertaining to your fish to get more info on each. Then decide which ones best suit you. Then sell the rest... Or if you like them all maybe buy another tank....????
Good Luck!!

Oh, and isnt crushed coral for a higher ph?? Im not sure
Ditch the plastic plants and get live... Low light plants are easy to maintain with regular lighting

thanks for the info greg i have sold my frontosa even tho i didnt want to get rid of her but its the best for the fish..and one of my plecos..thanks for the advise bro

our ph is about 8.2...what does the acei require? Since we sold the frontosa, I'm planning on lowering it...what should it be at for the dempsey and acai....we can't part with either...love them both! :irked: We aren't ready to get a bigger tank, as we live in a 2 bedroom apartment...not planning to buy a house for another 6-8months and then we are going to get a much bigger tank. Def love Fronts...we couldn't put one in with the dempsey when we get a bigger tank? I know they require diff ph levels...but we really like the mix :( Also...having a lot of probs with the nitrate level. It's currently at 50ppm (everything else; ammonia and nitrite are at 0ppm)...we have done two 25% water changes...and also bought "TLC"...some type of bacteria that was supposed to lower it...from the fish store (which was what they recommended...of course more money...and it didn't work) should we not feed for a few days? is there another bacteria or anything recommended? Should we do another water change? Or buy a new filter pad? Any info/advice would be so helpful because I was told from the LFS that a high nitrate will slowly kill our fish and im really worried. Thanks!!

dont change filter pads thats where all the beneficial bacteria lives , you can rinse them in a bucket of tank water. regular large water changes of around 50% will help keep the nitrates under control along with a good conditioner such as prime . as far as the ph just leave it be it is much easier for a fish to adjust to a stable ph than one that fluctuates . dempseys grow to be pretty territorial fish . good luck and happy fishkeeping

Thanks guys...we have and Eheim 2215 canister filter ...the fish store told us not to get live plants bc they make the water dirty and also because the fish will eat them...is this true? do you think I should do a 50% water change tomorrow (bc i am really worried about the nitrate level)? Like I said, we did a 25% about 3 days ago. Is 50ppm really bad? are the fish suffering bc of it? we have 2 tiny bottom feeders...are they plecos? I am so new to this! The cat fish is a zebra syno hybrid catfish. We def have algea...unfortunately our tank is in a room that gets a lot of sunlight...I try to keep the blinds down as much as possible. What are some good algea eaters that are good looking?

Also, since we sold the 7 inch frontosa (bc of the size of our tank) we are buying 1 (maybe 2) electric blue dempseys. Since they require different ph levels, do you really think its ok to get baby frontosa's? If so, I will get one tomorrow! I love them so much...such beautiful fish! Does anyone know how long it takes for dempseys to grow? frontosa's? How big does the zebra syno hybrid catfish get?

50ppm Nitrate isn't going to kill them but getting them down to or below 40ppm would be your best bet, so a water changed couldn't hurt. Also if you could post a couple of pics of your bottom feeders some experts on here might be able to id it. about the plants it's a lie that they make your water dirty. My tank is crystal clear and free of algae and it sits inside my bay window. umm but the part about your fish eating them or up rooting them is most likely true :( If you have a background on your tank you could put foil behind the background and that will help with the algae growth, thats what I did with my tank and saw a noticeable difference. good luck
