That's rubbish I had a bd over 10 years ago so why not in a thia farm

Haven't you herd of recessive genes

Look it doesn't matter to me hybrid or not it's a nice Ray
Is it worth $50k not in my eyes

I never said that you didn't have one 10 yrs ago.. but the thai farms started mass producing in the last 6 years.. 10 years ago... there weren't any BD's being produced in thailand. Don't even know why I'm defending a ray that is not even mine....and yes, I have heard of recessive genes. What does that have to do with the subject we were on? Are you saying that it should take 8 generations instead of 3?

This is a fun thread...lol... What i can say is Vince sent me the pic of the sister (the one he is currently unable to post) and that fish looks 100% BD to me.

You can have a litter of hybrid pups say 10 pups big litter I know lol
But 2 of them may look pure bd the others may not

The fact is you never know what you will get with hybrids

The mother or father may have diluted pearl genes and the owner never even knew it had a bit of pearl in it but every now and then it may kick out some pearl traits

I wouldn't say anything is impossible, All just depends on what you start with and get and what you have to play with as it goes along, I would be interested in seeing pics of this rays when it was younger, kinda amazed to hear that it didn't start out with some sort of similar pattern and also any siblings would be interesting to look at and compare,

A combo between a pearl and a bd will NOT give you this look in at least 3 generations of selective breeding. Too bad I can't load pics.. this fish was not born all crazy looking.. just ended up that way and I was gonna show a pic of her sibling and her step sister.

Do we really have definitive proof that nice adults throw nice pups? I've seen first hand how mediocre adults can throw absolutely stunning pups. I feel the ray in this thread is a textbook example of winning the genetic lottery...a perfect storm if you will.

This is true. I've seen many gorgeous pups grow into ugly adults. Many ugly pups become stunners. The looks of a pup is no indication of the quality of the fish when an adult. Seeing the parents is the only way. Even then, buying pups is always a gamble to some extent.

' A perfect storm' is the best way to describe what happened here. Both parents are nice but for this to happen...is pretty rare! The breeder is no longer selling pups from this combo!! Can't blame him.

Could not agree more! I have paid some big bucks for some Thai pups that looked amazing.. only to have it turn out butt ugly! Hard to trust linage as some breeders will tell you lies about who the parents are.
