There are all kinds of ways to manipulate those numbers. It doesn't say anything about the quality of the feed. You could dump in a bunch of feather meal to bump up the protein percentage.

my fish eat bugs and worms and fish and shrimp
protein is protein IMO
but spend wat you like on your pets

I feed my cichlids some trout food here and there; they really like it too!!! I don't care if lower quality. I feed a varied diet, even feed em Ocean Nutrition (very expensive).

I care more about what I EAT, than what they eat.

That feed is designed for the following:
-Rapid growth of small fish into larger fish
-long shelf life
-low odor (goes with the long shelf life)
-how cheaply can we make it?

It is not designed for:
-allowing fish the nutrients needed to reach an age beyond market size
-the nutrients needed to be reproductively successful
-disease resistant immune systems
-proper coloration and activity levels
-marketing to people that will only feed a few pounds a month

This is a feed made from industrial waste products that is produced with out regulation or regards to the idea that the fish might actually live beyond attaining market size. It is a text book case of "you get what you pay for." Fish kept on this diet long term can expect to experience immune system deficiencies, reproductive failure, lethargy, poor coloration, and shortened life span. It would be an acceptable addition to an already highly varied diet, but should not be a staple food.

Storing it in such a way to retain what ever nutritional value it has would be a serious challenge. Ascorbic acid (Vit C) in particular would not last long unless it was stored in an oxygen and moisture free environment. (Ziplock bags in the freezer.)

Have to agree with you here. Same thing as protein for human consumption. Just because you got your protein shake with a fancy label on it from GNC doesn't make it any better than the protein you get from chicken or steak. Anyway, who moniters and regulates fish food? Is there an FDA that approves NLS and Hikari?

Protein is NOT protein.

Protein is made up of 21 different amino acids. Some of these amino acids your body can make from others, others cannot be made by your body and MUST be consumed as part of the diet. Those are called essential amino acids. Getting a protein with the proper balance of essential amino acids is not just important, it's essential.

Another difference is that some proteins are digestible and others aren't. Feathers, finger nails and fish scales are also protein, but they aren't digestible. Chicken feathers are a very common ingredient in pet foods, particularly in fish feed. It raises the amounts of protein in the feed at very little cost to the manufacturer. It does not however, add to the nutrition gained from the feed.

All proteins are NOT created alike.

I bought a 50 pound bag of pound fish food for $12.00 and I used it to feed my Goldfish for over a year and a half and a school of 50 catfish and bluegill to for six months during the summer with it.
