you will need 17-19mm glass for a tank that deep

you can go to 36 inch deep with 15mm

thanks, either way I think its safer to reduce the depth, at first I though making it that deep would good be for an Asian aro, anyway, I may go with 28'' instead. But still I will use a thicker glass.

ok with a bare bottom that would make since. See I put sand in my tanks so the bracing on the inside of the tank does not bother me. I think the bracing is not really to help the bottom of the tank. I think is more for support on the sides of the tank. With out them you would only have a tiny bit of silicone holding the sides from blowing out. I could be wrong but that would be my best guess on why there there.

yeah, I have a 200g tank with bottom bracing also, I got sick of it sometimes since I can get a nice flat surface. I dunno if bracing is still necessary if the glass have more than enough thickness, which is what I probably would do. I visited a fish shop recently and I saw similar tank was built that they have there, I think the dimension was 3m x 1m x 1m, and they were using a 12mm glass all they way long with bracing on the bottom and on the top,.. Its pretty dangerous thought I wouldnt stand anywhere near it.
But considering the project I guess I would spend hell lots of silicons glues, not to mentioned how thick would the silicon be...
I built my 200g tank alone before, and it wasn't so hard to do it, but considering a 500g tank, I guess the amount of work would nonetheless double and harder.

my 300g is 96"x30"x25" and is 12mm glass. from what i see taller is the main factor on glass thickness.

this is true in all case, for some fish we do not need that much of dept,I am planning to house an Asian aro in it though it may be bit too much for it, but I really like a big tank, don't we all?

well you can give it a try with out the bottom bracing. Specially if you are going with thicker glass and not as tall. But personally I would not want to take that chance.

good luck with that. sorry but i must have misunderstood something,
why do you not want to brace the top?

thanks, but I did not mentioned that, I would still put bracing on top, and perhaps would have to drill through it for the filtration.

this one is actually tricky, I am not to sure my self, I think I'm gonna need some workshops to answer this question.
It seems a but hard to have a nice clean surface. Some all glass tank I saw in ACE hardware shop have done it differently, that is to have some sort of outer ring or boundaries (I dunno what to call it), which is acting like bracing as well.

ah gotcha my bad.

you could try outer bracing, but would you want to risk that alone.

if it was me, id brace the bottom and put up with it. its a lot of pressure and a LOT of water.

how long until you start to build?

ohh like bracing on the outside of the tank rather then the inside? The only other thing I could think about doing might be to build you stand and fram it so it goes up over teh bottom of the tank a big. This would give it good support.

do you mean bracing on the inside still?how else can I do it still?
regarding the time frame of the project, I should start it at least next month. There are lots of things going on so I better make a good preparations for it. Not to mention the filtration as well... still a long road a road ahead.

yup, that would help, the stand it self is going to be made out of steel frame, I'd design it but I wont make it my self since it'd involve welding. So I'd send it to a workshop nearby to have it done for me.

Yes i meant the inside. brace the bottom and top, just my opinion and im no pro lol.

consider me subscribed for when the build starts.

good luck.

"I want a nice flat bottom so instead of putting the bracing inside the tank, I'd put the bracing on the bottom and on top of that is the flat piece of glass, so therefor, all flat inside. Could this be OK too?"

Just double up on the bottom sheet.

It will brace and be flat...
