523 gallon plywood build (pic heavy)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you just completely inspired me, I was on the fence of building a 270 plywood tank, but now I need to try it. I might make it 180 gallons by going from 72x36x24 to 72x24x24.

Thank you. This is the main reason I even posted this build, if someone with literally no skill in carpentry and basically no tools can do this anyone can with information, time, patience and a little bit of cash. I was inspired by Gator, VLDesign, Tor-Erik among others on here so I'm happy that I can pass on a little bit of that inspiration that made me build this tank! BTW I would go with the 36" wide, you won't regret that extra width if you have the space!!

Yeah I probably will go with 36", can't wait to see it when finished.

Tank is currently 50% full, anyone know at what point the water pressure gets "serious" so to speak? Water level is going to be at 34" when full I have no leaks yet but I'm guessing the pressure isn't to great at 17" full. My thoughts were that at about 28-30" I should really be paying attention and watching for leaks, anyone have any input on this?

Well it's full. Good news.....no tank leaks that I can see so far. Bad new holy crap I hate plumbing, stupid bulkheads were leaking like niagara falls. By the time I had it under control probably put a good 5-10 gallons on the floor....still have a small leak in 1 of the pipes but imma have to think about how I'm going to fix that one. Just hoping the tank holds up, I'm guess what a week to see if it holds with no leaks then it should be good?

I am glad if I do build a tank it will be 280 gallons at most and I will be able to use canister filters and not have to mess with all that "plumbing". Make sure to keep us updated and for right now watching to see how your build goes is either giving me the green or red light to do my on DIY plywood tank build. You better also have pictures with all them perty fish.

Your aquarium is awesome. I just read the whole thread. I've recently thought of building one about the same size but I'm going to leave the water level at 36" so I can have a land area above the water. I'm thinking of doing it up like a river.

Canister filters would be the way to go, man I REALLY hate plumbing, bulkheads in particular. Pics will deffinately be coming of the sand, rocks and eventually fish once I know it's not going to pop a leak!

Thank you for the comment :) Having a land area above it would be amazing....actually would be unbelievable.

Well I'm trying to design it on the computer right now. Hopefully I be done with it this weekend. Once I have something worth posting I'll start a thread.
