Hey guys & gals I want to house a pair(male & female) of Balzini cichlids and Firemouth cichlids in a 55 gallon. How do you feel about this, Good Idea?

I think that the balzinis are a lot more docile than firemouths and, depending on the size of each pair, wouldnt be able to last against the potential aggression of the firemouths. I think Id do one or the other if it were me...and throw a school of some colorful dithers in with them.

I have had some large mean firemouths but no experience with balzini though, so Im just going by what Ive read about them.

Good Luck!

I don't think the balzani can hang with adult FM's.

Thanks now i have to figure out what pair to choose...I still wanna try it though!

My male Firemouth is pretty docile right now, as well as my male Balzini... Maybe I'll add some females and se what happens. My LFS has a nice selection of them. Or Could I just keep my male Balzani, Firemouth, and buy a male Jewel.

Gymnogeophagus balzanii are harem breeders, so a ratio of 1M:3F would be ideal. They also are from cooler waters than most other cichlids. I know some members on here don't even use heaters with this species as they can handle temps in th 60s

A jewel will be too aggresive to put with a balzani. Why don't you just do one or the other? An all balzani tank would be awesome. If I could find them around here I would jump on it.

If you're in memphis, tn House Of Tropicals has a wide variety of fish! He has a take full of beautiful Balzini and he has many other cichlid and MONSTER FISH!

But I might do an earth eater tank but I don't want them to be boring, I like the occasional cichlid argument!:D

If you still want to try it why even ask for others opinions just do it and find out what happens. The hardest lessons to learn are the ones we teach ourselves.
