55 gallon bichir and oscar?

If you've ever seen an adult Oscar, then you would know that they will not work in a 55. You need 75 minimum.

x2

Mixing an Oscar with a Poly seems to be a risk as well, I've seen a few threads on here with bichirs missing part of their heads :(

NOooooooooo

I bought a young oscar, maybe 4'', and everything was fine until he got around the 8 or 9'' mark. Then we'd look over and see him attacking our fish. I wasn't overly alarmed - he didn't have teeth, but the more he kept it up the more I started to worry about jaw strength. He crossed the line when he picked up my Ansorgii and tried to carry her across the tank like she was a rawhide bone he wanted to chew on. At that size, he was still the shortest fish in the tank, but he picked on them anyway. My oscar had to go byebye... I wouldn't let it mess with my bichirs for one more minute.

K, no oscar for me. How aggressive are the gold saum and severum? Are there any totally non aggressive non predatory fish that get big enough to keep with the delhezi that look good?

Some GTs are aggressive, some are passive. Same thing with Severums. It all comes down to the individual fish. I have had Polypterus with several different species of cichlids, and they have pretty much always ignored them (although this has been in a 125).

Do you think I can feed it live triops? I could get them for free from work. They're a type of shrimp, get about 2 inches long and grow to maturity in 2 months. The only reason I'm asking is because I dont know how thick the shell is on them.

Which would be better substrate, black gravel or play sand? I have had sand in all my tanks and I think it look awesome but I read that dark substrate makes the bichirs color up more. What do you guys think?
