55 gallon cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have an empty 55 and kinda sorta wanna have some SA cichlids. What species stay small enough to stay in there for a forever home? Thanks :)
I agree with VRWC on this. If the point of this thread is to get suggestions about cichlids that will live FOREVER in a 55, several of the mentioned suggestions aren't good ideas. Stay away from Oscars, RD, and Jags. These fish get way to big and bulky to live forever in a 55. I know that some will still argue against that though. Apistos, Honduran Red Points, Convicts are some much better choices. There are number of cichlids that could live for life in your 55. Check out the CA/SA species sticky on this page. It gives many examples of cichlids and their tank requirements. This could guide you in the right direction. Good luck!

Dempsey. Salvini, Convicts, Red Devils.

I would go with a Salvini pair in a 55g. My 2nd choice would be JD's. If you want a fish that is more easy going maybe Blue Rams?? Do you want a pair or single fish?? Whatever you decide please do not put a Jaguar in a 55g for life... it will not work at all as they get 17-18" and the tank is only 13" wide!!! Just saying that would be a poor choice is all.

Thanks guys! I guess I didn't realize there was already a sticky on this. Oops! I noticed there was a lot of threads about 55, but I just wanted a general list before I started figuring out the specifics. Most of the other threads seemed to be about people's specific tanks with specific fish. This was perfect and exactly what I was looking for :) I'm thinking about getting about 3 fish. I don't really want a single pet in there, but I don't want to get a community either (I already have a 20 gallon with a bunch of little fish haha). I'm thinking some combination of JD, convict, and GT. Is this feasible, or am I fooling myself? Those are the ones I can easily get as babies, and since this will be my first experience with cichlids in general (besides a very shy firemouth in my community) I want to get something I can get locally.
