Hello Gang,

My husband hasn't said yes YET( LOL) but he is thinking about us getting a 55 gallon fish tank, we currently have a 30 long fish tank and love it. Here is my question(s): We currently have the under gravel filtration system and we aren't sure if this is the way to go. I would love to hear the pros and cons and just your thoughts on what you think. Any other helpful tips, hints and suggestions would be great!!

Another question: in our local paper someone is selling a 55 gallon with wooden stand for 200 dollars, is this a good deal or not?

Thanks gang for any and all help!!!

Krista :D

I myself prefer wrought iron stands they are indestructable and a brand new 55 gallon tank with new wrought iron stand is $125 to $160 tops for both.
Its easy enough to put a "skirt" on it if you dont like looking at a stand

If its a nice REAL wood cabinet stand and you prefer cabinets than great and a good deal again if GOOD cabinet .
If its a warped stand or those cheap compressed paper/plywood types than IMO they stink .
Wooden stands range fromm WOW to yuck you have to be kidding .

UG works well even in 55 gallon but drawback is you cant have fish that dig ,limits decorations / floor space you can use as you need most area as filter, you cant use thin layer of gravel.

Well, you have one so not telling you anything you don't know.

I just bought a Marineland emperor 400 and love it great for 55 hang on back filter again UG will certainly work in a 55 gallon but a good hang on back filter is just bit easier and allows for diff types of fish and plants .

This will somewhat give you and your husband 55 gallon tank stand prices .

so the hang on back filter is what you prefer? My dad likes the hang on back filters better.. We also got our son a 29 gallon fish tank for Christmas and his will have the hang on back filter. I am not having any problems with the under gravel filter but my dad keeps telling me the hang on ones are so much better, but again its preference. Thank you Louie for this great information!!

Keep it coming gang!!

Again Thanks!!!

Krista

definitely stay away from the UGF. go with 2 HOB's or maybe a canister filter...UGF are a hassle, and limit what fish you can keep

Okay just got back from my lfs and am a little confused!! I need some input on the kinds of HOB filters and pumps....

ANy good name brands and how many if I got a 55 tank or even my husband is thinking about a 75.

Please HELP ME!!!!

Thanks

Krista

Hang On the Back (HOB) or Canister Filters are great. HOBs are easy to clean and work well. Canisters don't need nearly as much cleaning and will enable you to have the tank closer to the wall since you only have 2 hoses to deal with.

Here are the two filters we were told are good: Marine Land 350 or Emperor

What about a water heater?

Thanks all for helping me figure this out!! It can get a little confusing!

thanks oscarcrazy

I am going to ask hubby to lets get the 75 gallon one.

So with this aqua clear 100 I would only need one of these?

I apologize for all these questions but I wanna make sure I get all the right stuff..

Should be enough. Depends really on what you plan to do with the tank.
