I'm going to try to move my giant day gecko into a new vivarium in the next few months, which will leave me with an empty 55 gallon tank. I have a few different ideas for it and want to check with you guys to see if they'll work.

Idea 1: African Biotope

Senegal Bichir
African Brown Kinfefish
Synodontis ornatus
African Butterflyfish
and maybe some Congo tetras

Idea 2: South American Biotope

Apistogramma pair or Firemouth
Peppered cories
Centipede Knifefish
Beunos Aires tetras

do american native tank. sculpins darters and other small fish.

I think Idea 2 is sound. the african tank is nice, but i really don't feel the bichir would be happy for life in there, mine is over 13" now and quite thick. Also the congo tetras would eventually become food.
Just my 2 cents, good luck either way.

i agree ^ but i think 1 would look better i have a s/a tank and its nice just want something new.

I was thinking that's what would happen. The tank is 20" wide, so a 13" bichir would still be able to maneuver fairly easily. The SA idea should work pretty well though. I have time to evaluate things.

20" wide? really? Sens rarely get over 11-12".

I would have said "go for it" if it was the standard 12". I'd definately put a bichir or five in their. ;)

I'm going to have to start tallying everyone's votes.

Yeah, the 55 is an older tank with odd dimensions. It's kinda trick to find hoods and covers for it.
