I have a 4" Jack Dempsey and a pleco 3" and have bought him a new 55 gallon home. I would hate for them to be the only fish in new tank. I would like him to have one other fish to hang out with, and get along enough to grow old together. any suggestion?

He seems small now but him by himself is going to stretch the limit of that 55 more than you think, especially if he's male. If you're dead set on trying some other things my recommendations would be another JD, a fire mouth or a convict.

and do it sooner rather that later, otherwise the JD will believe it "owns" the tank

Like previously stated, a JD is going to fill out the 55g sooner than you think. If yours is a female, you "may" be able to get away with a Firemouth or Convict for example, but if it's a male you don't really have any options.

What is it about a male that leaves me option less
