My advice is figure out what you wanna try and do it now. Like people have said, if he's alone too long he'll think it's his tank and won't share it.
Fins are sometimes kind of un-reliable when it comes to sexing, escpecially when fish are young. Female JDs have more blue splotching around the gill plate and less color in their body. Males lack the blue splotches on the gill plate but have more blue speckling in their body.
