They also get quite colorful, esp. in late spring when the males get a bright yellow breast front.
 
If you plan on keeping the fish for life I would recommend this...

Rockbass...only one. Think of them like coldwater oscars. Large, aggresive and messy.
Bluegill...probably only one for the same reason. Both these sunfish get very large.
Pumpkinseed...smallest of the three, maybe two or three of them in a 55.

There are many other smaller sunfish species as well such as longears, red brested, blue spotted and banded. For really small you could do a shoal of pygmy sunfish.

gonna set up my 75 with pumkin seeds and maybe some madtoms with the wild caught blue gill what steps should i take before putting them in the tank as far q
 
gonna set up my 75 with blue gill thinkin maybe pumkin seeds and maybe a rock bass is there any thing i should do with wild caught fish before i put them in with other fish just thinking maybe minnows or madtoms
 
id have to go with bluegill,right now i have one in my 30 gallon with my oscar. the bluegill is bout 3 inches and the oscar bout 6 and the bluegill is actually able to fend off the oscar!!! haha i just put him in there when he was about 1 inch and he grew quite alot on the flakes in the tank haha but seriously i would have to choose bluegill :D
