Update. I went out to check on the fish this morning. The water was quite cloudy. I decided I need a filter. So I first tested out my vibrator style air pump, a pump I thought would be much weaker then the piston pump. I was wrong. The amount of airflow it's putting out is noticeably more. So I hooked that up to the airline and it had no problems pushing air through the 15' of hose and down about 3' under the water. I even put in the check valve with no noticeable difference in airflow.
I found an old vitamin bottle and rigged up a ghetto style filter. It's packed with poly fiber and has a layer of seeded gravel on the bottom for buoyancy reasons. It seems to work quite well. Its also running 24/7 now.
