I just got another 55 gallon tank. I went to a place called RI Aquarium just to look around and they had tons of red belly piranhas. My plan was to get enough so that they act more natural ( I heard 4 was the number) and upgrade when necessary. I have a breeding pair of convicts to use a feeders.

But a couple questions I still have:

In the event I can't upgrade how many full grown red bellies can i keep?
How long would it take for 4 to outgrow a 55?
What would be a good tank size for 4?

Thanks in advance.

I have 6 right now in a 30 gal they are each about 2 inches long...once they start to loose their spots though they will be reaching sexual maturity and need a lot more space i will be upgrading them to something between 110-130 gal

a 55 is 12" wide correct? if so when fully grown you could only keep one if even that in that tank.

Its an alright growout though and they would be fine for a little more than a year if you are maintaining the water properly and feeding them well.

Get a 75.. its a bit wider and taller but you could keep all four in there for a very very long time if not life with good filtration...

oh yeah you will need tons of filtration and frequent water changes in the 55 to keep up with the bioload.. pygos especially are very messy fish so its always better to give them as much filtration as possible because this isn't a river where the crap just flows away.

yeah...so with good filtration and care they will reach about 6-7" within a year. I would begin looking for a bigger tank when they get to that point.

yeah.. the only difference between a 55 and a 75 is four inches of width and maybe some height i dont remember lol but height isnt a huge factor at that size.

Great advice. Follow it blindly people! :D

75g is 18" wide, that's 6" difference in width and will be much better. 90g has the same foot print as 75g just taller. if 4ft length is longest you can get then 120g (4x2x2) would be the best.
