55 Gallon Piranha Tank Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
all my readings today were perfect except for the ammonia. The ammonia reading came in at .5.....Is the ammonia going up do you think or coming down to 0? I've only had my tank up for 4 days. Is it normal to get good readings on everything else so quick except for ammonia? I lost another goldfish today. That brings my count to 4 casualties from my original 12.

I am pretty sure you are justy starting the spike afte ronly 4 days.

how high will the ammonia rise before coming back down to level zero? I lost another goldfish. I have a small 5 gallon tank, should I put in one of the ornaments from there into the 55 gallon tank? The 5 gallon tank has been established for 4 months.

The ammonia will rise until enough bacteria grow to use all that your goldfish produce. Then the same will happen for the nitrite, and then it is finished.

um.. just take the filter off the 5 gallon and dump the contents into the 55.. the filter media that is..

or.. what do you have on the 5 gal??

For god sakes please change the water. Yes, the elevated ammonia levels will create more "food" for the bacteria... but it will also kill the fish. I know, they are feeders... still fish. I'm not trying to sound mean, but there are a lot of people surfing around under the impression that only expensive fish are worth taking good care of. Danios are a popular choice for cycling because they tolerate ammonia burn on their gills well, but most people who do this wouldn't like having mustard gas shot down their throat.

As long as your are cycling, use just a little more patience and don't kill some fish.

I placed the filter pad from my 5 gallon and submerged it in my tank. The goldfish were tearing it up. I also placed a rock from my 5 gallon tank and put it in the tank. Should I be feeding the fish alot or just a little? Also, was it cool adding the filter pad and rock?
