I'm currently using one of my 55g tank as a grow out for a BGK and the little Palmas/Buettikoferi I got a few weeks ago to avoid them having to compete for food against my silver dollars bunch. But I was toying with the idea of making it the permanent home of my polys. They seem more active moving around the driftwoods without the SDs darting around all over the place.

If I stick with the Palmas complex types, do you think it would be okay to keep them in a 55 gallon for life? If so, how many can I keep in it? I'm getting the itch to get maybe a Palmas Polli and maaaybe another Buettikoferi....

Palmas group should be fine to keep in a 55g. Id say you can keep about 4-5 in there with no problems.

I wouldn't try and keep more than 1-2 in there if that. Assuming the 55g is 12" that's roughy what the fishes max size will be (I've seen and kept 13"-14" palmas palmas before and have seen some monster buettikoferi). For now it'll be fine but it'll be cramped in there as it grows.

Thanks for the correction DrB.

Gotcha. I sure wouldn't want them to be cramped. I originally planned to grow the little ones a bit on the 55g before moving them back to the 125g...I'll just stick to that plan then. Thanks again for all the advice!

Btw, on the 125g...how many do you think I can keep? The main stock would probably just be the polys. I'll probably move my Oscar and SDs when the little ones move back there.

So...I'm planning to place another order today with either WetSpot or Toyin (if he ever responds back...) for another Buetti and maybe a Polli or two, which would bring my poly count to 6. Can I keep them comfortably in a 125g with a BGK for life? Or is that too much bottom dwellers?

I think you will be fine with the polys. Never kept bkg though.

One thing ive learned with polys and cichlids is they do get along great but feeding the polys can be difficult with aggressive eaters like oscars
