hey people...i just got a 55 gallon tropical setup , but its infested with snails...i do have 2 clown loaches and they dont help a bit...not sure whats up with that, everyone says thats a sure way to get rid of snails...im gonna try some potatoes tonite, see how that works...i have had-a-snail but im pretty cautious on using it, id really rather not...if i do tho how long will it take to cycle before i can add any invets?also will this hurt my fish?these snails are killin the water it seems...i dont have ANY testing supplies my uncle kept them darnit...anywho what should i do?any help is appreciated...

easy, take out the clown loaches and put in some zuchini, it's like a magnet. Just pull out the zuchini after about 12 hours. all the snails will be on it, and just repeat the process

scoop them out and send them to me, i used to bring them home weekly when i worked at the LFS. if the cucumber bait dont work, try slowly adding salt to inhibit their reproduction but not enough to effect your fish. there are also copper additives but use them as a last resort

so im pretty sure , about positive, i have malaysian trumpet snails...i put in the potatoes last night, but not a single snail attached in the morn...i really dont want to use the copper additives...ill have to try zuchinni or lettuce...is there anything detrimental in having these snails?do you think they could mess with my water params?there is alot to say the least...and im thinkin if nothing else ill take the tropicals out for a bit and put in 2 puffers...figure 8s or somethin similar...do you think this could work?also, what are you using the snails for muskelunge?any more info would be great...

if you dont have anything against them leave'm. they'll eat the debris off the bottom of the tank. they are not harmful and will only populate as much as the amount of food availible. keep the tank clean and they'll have nothing to eat. you can maintain low numbers but not starve'm out completely. i used to keep them in my tank before i went to sand. i threw them all out in the pond. they are one of the few 'good' snails. if you must get rid of them, remove your fish, and a ton of aquarium salt and wait a day or two. it will dry them up. but dont forget to remove the biofilter. drain and refill. if you dont have another tank to put them in while doing that, remove the fish into a bucket, remove and boil everything in your tank, clean out the filter really good and put everything back together. the MTS is a hard snail to get rid of. i have removed all my gravel and packed it into the attic in a bucket and when i got the gravel out 3 months later and filled a tank up, they were still alive. good luck. i'd keepem

thanks for the quick response, you said you used to keep them before you went to sand...i have eco complete, i beleive...why didnt you keep them when you went to sand?

i just didnt like the look of them crawling around. when i had gravel the empty shells would fall between and it wasnt obvious i had millions of snail shells laying around. i too have eco-complete. looks good dont it!

i def love the eco complete but could use another bag or two...i have two bags in the 55...the snail shell shavent bothered me yet but ill think ill just give up on getting rid of them and pick them out when i go into my tank...i mean if theyre beneficial why not...

what fish are in the tank? im assuming african cichlids?

mts are fairly impossible to get rid of.If you took the tank apart and bleached everything you might kill all of them.Theyre harmless and do serve a purpose in the tank so Id say just get used to them.

One of my tanks at work would have a die off every once in a while from coworkers "helping":irked: me feed the fish.I added mts and havent had a problem since.
