Aren't pickerel cold water fish?

they can take low 70's without stress, so i was thinking putting all of them in at around 72F-75F.

well then bichirs are tropical the african butterfly is tropical the ctenopoma is tropical and 75 is a tatse low for them just so you know-Anne

In a larger tank I would say it might work but I think in your current setup you would be pushing the stocking limits.

really? i'd think a 12" pickerel towards the top and middle and two 12" bichir at the bottom, i don't think there would be much need for more space.....or would there?

Space isen't what concerns me, I'm thinking in terms of bio-load. The amount of waste produced by three 12" fish in a 55g.

oh, bioload! i can take care of that! 2x AC 110s. one for mechanical and one for bio.

That filtration won't remove nitrates, the end result of the nitrogen cycle. The more fish you have the higher the nitrate will get in a shorter amount of time. Thats why you gotta do water changes, the question is...how many are you willing to do per weekin order for that setup to work?
