I was wondering if I could have a blue acara and a firemouth in a 55 gallon together, and what other species of fish would go well with those two species. I know the acara and firemouth are more calm cichlids, and I want to have something that schools. Any suggestions

If you want a characin, bleeding heart tetras have been pretty hardy in my experience. They should be able to held their own.

Try filament barbs. Very nice tint green color to them. There's also another specie of the filament barb but with a little more black in it. Can't think of the name right now. But look into those 2.

Can't guarantee cichlid compatibility, but they should be OK.....as far as a dither fish, I would suggest Giant Danios.....hardy, & most importantly, fast.

Hi!
What about swordtails?
Available in so many colors, pretty hardy and their offspring are delicious snacks for your cichlids.

If you are looking at Swordtails, do 1 male and 3 females.

4 Swordtails and 5 Danios, an Acara and Firemouth would be a well stocked 55.

Acara, Firemouth, and a school of 6-10 Tiger Barbs would also work well.

Word of warning: Firemouths tend to hide a lot when they are not in groups and depriving it of hiding places will likely stress it out.
