I am setting up a 55 gallon just for native sunfish. Where I live there are few sunfish species so I will be ordering from this site: http://www.jonahsaquarium.com/fishlist01.htm

So far the sunfish that have caught my eye are the pumpkinseed, the longear sunfish, and the dollar sunfish. Possibly a yellow bullhead also.

Of these species what is compatible for my tank? And in what numbers?

Suggestions are welcome and encouraged ;) . Also I have no clue what other suitable tankmates would be except for fathead minnows.

Thanks - Jighead

pumpkinseeds and longears are my personal favorites..if you put them in a 55 gallon...maybe like 3-4 small ones depending on the size but they will outgrow the tank
crayfish are good tankmates if you dont get the bullhead..but id get the bullhead and leave the crays

Fathead minnows will not be tankmates for very long.

i dont think pumpkins will outgrow the 55... i had a small one in a 2g for a lil while

but he was veryyyyyyyyy small

dollar sunfish is the way to go

oh and, ive never seen a pumpkin at 10" in the wild if anyone has, i need a pic

so i think a tank will stunt their size

I've caught ~12" Pumpkinseeds on flies before, but that is not a very common occurance.

IMO you could probably keep one of each in a 55. Not a bullhead though. Pumpkinseeds usually dont grow over 8" in an aquarium and longears I think are like 6-7" fish. Dollar sunfish rarley hit 5" I'm pretty sure.
