55 gallon sunfish tank

to me percidae= perch like fish with darters being a sub group in the family. Perch and walleye would not occupy niche in an a tank as darter species would.

because wild fish when introduced as babies almost to never attain wild size

That's not true, it does not even make sense. I can undertand that with maybe some of the larger fish like red tail catfish but there is no reason to think a fish like a pumpkinseed will not reach it's full potensial in aquaria. Think about it, fish kept in fish tanks typically live much longer than wild ones, they also live in year round warm temps with no major cold periods to slow their metabolism. If a fish gets stunted in aquaria it's the owner's fault and typically due to health problems and poor water quality. It's best to be prepaired for however large the fish is capabile of growing.

i refer to darter like fishes as the family percidae. which includes sauger and yellow perch

What you consider darter-like fishes and what science consider darter-like fishes are not the same. Like dredcon was saying the genuses Percina, Crystallaria, Etheostoma, and Ammocrypta are considered darters. Walleye, yellow perch and sauger are not darters.

The logperch is the second largest "darter", and the biggest that is easy to collect. The only one that I am aware of that reaches a larger size is the freckled darter, which has a small range and may be declining in numbers. I have only collected one freckled darter, shocked it up in the middle of the leaf river in south Mississippi, and it was the biggest darter I have ever seen. When I refer to "darters" I am including fish in the following genuses Percina, Crystallaria, Etheostoma, and Ammocrypta.

Oh yes, I forgot about the freckled darter. Even still though, my freshwater fishes field guide (Peterson's) report's logperch at 71/4" long and the freckled at 8". I don't think a size difference that small is worth making a fuss over (not saying that you are). I was wrong though, even if only by a tiny bit the freckled is still larger.

hey, i guess i learned something too:(

and i still disagree about max size, pumpkin seed in a very large tank maybe, but not in a 55

no way

If the water quality and diet are what they should be I don't see why not. If oscars can grow up to 12 or more inches in a 55g than I don't see why a pumpkinseed cannot grow up to 8 or 10".
