A friend of mine just gave me his 55 gallon with stand, filter, light, etc. I've had it sitting in my living room for a while not sure what to put in it. Any ideas? I want to keep it freshwater, and I'd rather do one or two large fish than lots and lots of little fish (although a combination would be cool, if possible).

The first thing I would put into the tank is Ammonia . You can read all about the fish less cycle here. sterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?203911-FISHLESS-TANK-CYCLING-(MUST-READ)

If you have no idea what the hell that means then you should proceed here http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/biologicalcycle/a/nitrogencycle.htm

The one thing you shouldn't do, is take advice from a Local fish store. Unless , It is them telling you to go to MFK and seek advice there :p But once you have those bases covered and you're tank is cycled I personally would put in a pair of Jaguar Cichlids.

Maybe go with some medium sized chichlids? I'm not an expert but I really like Red severums, or red spotted severums, they don't get too big and are gorgeous in my opinion.

The Jaguars sound cool but maybe I'll look into severums. From what I've heard, they're a lot more docile than other cichlids so idk, could they coexist with geophagus or even dwarf cichlids?

I'm too sure... But they are incredibly docile, I have a red shoulder severum, he is with a orange tiger oscar(very aggressive) and a Florida gar, and he is great with them. He'll poke them very lightly if they are bugging him but nothing more than that. Hope this helped

On second thought, scratch the dwarf cichlid idea. So i'm assuming Severums would go well with geophagus, convicts, blood parrots, and blue acara? I think that would be a cool combination. If not, are there any other semi-aggressive cichlids they'd do well with?

Terrors are supposed very aggressive from what I've heard... I've had some bad experience with Texas chiclids being extremely agressive.

If you want color, at a decent size, chiclids are probably the best bet.
