How are you gonna get a male convict and a male firemouth? If you are buying at the store when they are at a young age, they can be very difficult to sex. Convicts also have a wide range of personalities. Some go along great with other fish, some are vicious especially males. Why not go with a firemouth pair in a 55? How about a jack dempsey and a couple of dithers?

bro i don't even like jack dempsey, they aren't my type of color and they get up to 10 inches, if a foot long cichlid can't fit in a 55 then neither can a 10 inch, and it is very easy to sex a black convict, females have orange bellies and males don't

Don't put a foot long fish in a 55. If you don't like jack dempseys, that is cool. But very rarely do they grow to 10 inches unless they are in a huge aquarium. I have had a JD in a 180 for a couple of years and he is right around 7 inches and he is male. NEXT, not always do males not have orange bellies. Often they do because of new strains in America. I am breeding convicts as feeders, and both my male and female have orange bellies and they were caught in the wild. Good luck with your tank.

Ok, well then if there's one WITHOUT any orange on the pelvic region, it will still be a male, regardless of if there are both males and females WITH orange.

Agreed^, but hard to tell when they are young. Regardless, a male convict at full size can easily claim a 55 gallon to himself. My convict adults are monsters and would never fit in a 55.
