hi guys i found a killer deal on a brand new in the box 55 gallon tank on CL the other day. i have decided i want to build a stand for it to sit under my wall mounted tv. the stand will also incorporate a shelf to hold my blu-ray player, dvr, xbox360, wii.

so the stand will have a 2x4 base with 2x4 legs and a 2x3 top frame for the tank to sit on. the media shelf will be a sheet of 3/4 inch ply and the stand will be covered in 1/4 inch oak plywood that will be stained to match my other tank in the room. i will also be building a low profile hood to house two marine land led lights and to help keep the humidity down. inside the stand will be a sump made from 2 ten gallon tanks

so what do you think of my design?

the first pic is a too scale drawing of the tv and wall that the tank will be on. that is a 42 inch tv above the tank

Looks very clean and well organized. I'm not sure I would put evaporating water under the television though. Seems like you would at least void the warranty or have some problems shortly with the tv. If it weren't for the electronics.... Maybe hang a picture above and organized some collectibles in the shelf instead? Something that can get wet if it happens? Just caution. I'd also throwin a center brace on the stand. Just got done reading a thread about diy stands failing. I think it was titled, "all diy stand builders read first."

Did you ever get around to building this? I am seriously considering building something like this and keeping my PS3/Xbox/Blu Ray player underneath which would free up A LOT of space in my room. Would love to know what size wood/type of screws/and tips/advice on making something like this. I currently have a cheap steel stand and I just feel so poor looking at it lol.

I sure hope he didn't. The idea is exactly what I was considering for underneath my 55" wall mounted, but I've built a lot of stands recently and that is NOT strong enough!

It needs more sway protection, and a 2x3 frame for the top is just asking for warp trouble which will eventually be a broken tank.

That concept would work well if the whole thing was built with 2x4's and 2 1/2" wood screws, but add an additional leg on the INSIDE of the frame in every corner. They will sit on the floor, and help hold the uprights to the top and bottom rectangles. Your tank weight will remain on the uprights.
