55 Gallon Tankmate ideas with Yellow tails

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I keep rustys with acei never had them breed togather. Acei are actaully top swimmers and grow much larger then the rustys there really never even near each other. My advice on getting rustys is pick carfully a lot of the rustys in lfs don't color up at all and are really bland. Yellow labs would go well with this mix as well all very mild mannered. I was actaully lucky enough to pick up some wild caught rusty the other day ill post picks when I get a chance.

Thanks. I am hoping I can avoid LFS as much as I can. I don't want to spend $50-60 for just 5 rustys. I am going to spend some time looking for someone local who breeds them.

I actually never considered the P. Acei and the Rusty to breed together. I should have been clear. I am asking if there are rusty hybrids commonly sold. I know a lot of times with Yellow labs, you are getting hybrids.

Sorry, accidentally double posted. Returned to this tab and saw my message was still in the reply box and I pressed submit.

I'm sure there are rusty hybrids out there I've never heard or seen anything specific though its mostly inbredding.

I would not keep peacocks or any kinda of hap with mbuna mbuna should really only be kept with other mbuna. I myself had had some success with neon jewels in my mbuna tank in fact the 4 I had actauly made two pairs and both pairs have produced.

I'm not an expert but just set up an mbuna tank and did a lot of research prior.

It can be done, but the problem is the mbuna set off the peacocks who are normally more peaceful.Use more aggressive peacocks like a jacobfrierbergi species or a sunburst(hybrid):D

With the Acei(now reclassified as Pseudotropheus Elegans)in a 55, the options I would consider are Rusties, Cynotilapia Afra(now reclassified as Zebroides), Yellow Labs (OR Red Zebras, not both in the same tank for potential crossbreeding), and Labeotropheus Fuelleborni. 3 groups of 5-6 each.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I am leaning towards:

4 - P. Elegans
4-5 - Rusties
4-5 - Yellow labs

I now have to hope this guy comes to buy my adult fish today. Then I need to start looking for locals selling these fish.
