Hello all,

Iv been doing Cichlids for a long while now; mainly African. Iv done the Mbunas and the Haps and the Peacocks...and Im just getting into the Vics.

I have a 55G and would like to know if its ok to put 2 different colonies in there? I currently have a colony of 9 Ruby's (Haplochromis sp. 'Ruby') from Dav'es. I am wanting one more colony of a different species...maybe Zebras, maybe Christmas Fulus. What do you guys think? Can they be put in the same tank...without worry about cross breeding? I do NOT want to cross breed...would just simply like 2 outstanding groups in one tank (can you imagine)

Thanks in advanced.
Jimmy

A 55gal may be too small for two colonies. I have a bunch of Vics, no colonies, but they are very aggressive towards others and almost dominate the tanks.

The only way to prevent cross-breeding is elminating the females, so get only males! :)

An all male tank would be awesome...annd I will eventually do that. I wanna try my luck at breeding these rubys though. Dave has excellent lines of Vics...and here in Houston...there are almost NO dealers or fish stores that deal with African Vics...so im thinkin I can try to help the community out here.

Like I said...Houston...it's dry, or atleast to my knowledge.

If there are any members here on MFS, that live in Houston, and breed Vics...feel free to mention their names.

Also, another questions, besides Dave, anyone else reliable enough to order vics from?

Thanks,
Jimmy

Right, have you checked with that group? Are you having Dave ship you fish? I really like his stock, but the HCCC has shipped fish to a guy in my local club. He was really happy with them. I Dave has also shipped some out here with great success. I was saying if you are looking for something Dave does not have, these guys can probably help you out.

Registered with HCCC, thanks for telling me about them. I also signed up and paid for their membership deal. We'll see where it leads me too...

Still wandering to anyone out there on MFK if someone has any knowledge or pictures or experience with keeping an all male Victorian tank?

Thanks,
Jimmy

Welcome to the world of vics!!! Ruby’s are one of the most beautiful species, their color is so vibrant!!!! You can mix vics you just need to be careful what you mix. The Ruby’s are also a little more mellow then a lot of the vics. I would not mix them with the Fulu’s the females are too similar. The thing to remember when mixing is females need to be totally different and you’d like the males to stand apart as well. The Zebras are a good one to mix as they are completely different…The problem you may run into is the Zebras may be too aggressive for the Ruby’s. Someone else may be able to chime in on that as I haven’t tried keeping the 2 together. It may be a good question for the people at HCCC. I am also a member of that club…There are some of the biggest names in the vic world in this club. They know their stuff.

Also, one more thing to add…You may be able to do a male only vic tank. I for one have not tried it but I do know that vic coloring is very mood dependant and they may or may not color.
