Vieja (Paratheraps)(Cichlasoma) Synspilum can get big, 14-16" is not uncommon in captivity, and they are a tall-bodied fish. I think most of the people here are of the opinion that 55 gallons is a bit small for that sp.
A Jack Dempsey or Green Terror would do well in a 55 for life, and both fish look awesome once they hit maturity. GTs can get 12+" long, but this size is fairly uncommon.
