55g Drum filters?

You're speaking my language. I've built a ton of these.

Attached are some easy pictures. The most common setup is the vortex settlement chamber / bio / mechanical skimmer that is in the first picture. It is an all in one that works quite well. Excellent surface area for bacteria, easy to clean, and void of fines due to the design. It is absolutely necessary that you put a 90 and skim of the surface on the return and even more necessary that your return pipe is larger than the feed pipe if you are going pump fed/gravity return. If you are going gravity fed/ pump return, be sure that you don't gulp air as that will capitate your pump.

Sorry for the roughness of the pics, I drew them on my iPad.

Hope this helps,

Carl

Also, for your stock load, I'd build all three filters in series.

Vortex settlement chamber / triple filter / moving bed with 250l of k1 as stated above. You have an additional 2500 gallons of water filtration under heavy fish load with the Savio Spring Flow media in the triple filter as well as some bio with the Matala mechanical filter.

The triple drum setup is enough for a typical koi pond under heavy load for water volumes up to about 10,000 us gallons.

In ponding, for the DIY crowd, this is the staple filtration setup that had been used for many years only with a few slight variations.

Good luck.
