55g. Gravel to Sand. (w/ pics)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for posting this.....I've been contemplating doing the same on my 100gal. Now I have the confidenc to do it....

Looks ALOT better! I made the change to sand in my 75 gal not long ago, it was well worth it! I snagged silica sand from a pool shop, it cost around $8 for 50lbs, but it was also completely clean (something about people not wanting cloudy pools.)

Sand ususaly dosn't need to be vaced much because things don't get under it much, but it does need to be stirred every week or two to keep it from going anaerobic. If your syphon is adjustable then it's very easy to keep from sucking it up.

It's a little extra work, but more than worth it.

very nice albino oscar.
the light sand makes ur silver dollars loose a bit of color.
the sand looks better then b4 pic.
only 1 thing didnt look good was the 330

great job! now... how much time would it cost me to change my 180.. maybe 4x the time you spent. wanted to change my gravel to sand... :) would it be better to take all the fish out first and do the change? :screwy:

Yeah, a 180 would be a project alright, but its definitely doable. IMO its better to leave them in the tank. This is especially the case if you have large fish. Netting is very stressful. Not to mention having to put them in buckets that probably aren't big enough for them, or a tank that has completely different parameters (ie-temp/amm/nit/etc.) Then when the tank is finished, you have to net them again, and introduce them to a totally new environment. Just MO.

Whats a 330? If you are referring to my filters then... one is an Emperor 400, and the other came with the tank, not quite sure what it is.

Aah, yea, that thing never really did much good. I had to make an intake tube for it out of... something, I'm not even sure what i used. But yea, It's not the greatest filter, hence the Emperor 400. :headbang2
