55 is too small for an RD. Average size for a male RD is 12+ inches.

A JD or GT is more suitable. Who cares what one is more mean, whats it got to be mean to?

A JD and GT have attitude too and are capable of killing a RD.

he specifically asked for a mean fish lol and oscars also grow 12 plus and there minimum tank size is 55 gallons, 1 red devil alone in a 55 gallon long will do fine. and they very rarly grow over 12 inches most stop at 10-11 inches

55 also isnt suitable for an oscar. Some people do it anyway. Reason why Oscars and RDs dont get over 10-11 inch in a 55 is because they are in a cramped tank.

Ive seen Oscars in a 55 and when they turn they slap the corners cause its too small.

thats if its a female lol if its a male than i understand it might need atleast 70 gallons

Female RD is a little more acceptable. You cant tell sex with Oscars though, unless they are in the act of spawning.

They need atleast 18 inch width and 4 ft length.

i have my female devil and my jd in my 60-70 gallon (since its bow fronted) and they seem fine i understand that males do get alot bigger in height and lenght

So 1 possibly 2 inches to turn around in should be ample space for a RD and what if his RD breaks the 12" mark
yes the minimum tank size for oscars is 55gals but not in that foot print
A 55 long is only 12" deep cutting it way to close for a fish that can reach 12"+

the OP didnt give us the dim of his tank i have a tank that is not very long but is very large

id get a freddy or maybe 2 pairs of firemouths would be sweet for the firemouth flareing and bein in breeding colors.... could be really really great looking tank if u do it right.

RD and oscars have very different temperament in my experience oscars are very slow and easy going while RD's are hyper and easily excited making a small tank much more of a liablity and danger to them selves in a small tank
all in all I just dont thinl an RD or Oscar for that matter can be kept happily in a 55 long
