BE CAREFUL!!
Most all 55g tanks a built with tempered glass...if you try to cut it, you will have a zillion tiny pieces all over the place...

That's normally only the bottom pane. The side panes are rarely tempered in any tank.

Not so....
the bottoms on older 55's were only tempered, but most all the newer 55's are tempered...

hard to tell which ones, but as a rule the thinner sided 55's are tempered...

i do not know of any current manufacturer that has a non tempered 55. I have one that i wanted to drill and I did not know the maker of the tank so I called, marineland, perfecto, glasscages, aqueon, and top line and all of those are tempered on all sides. Perfecto was the only company that said it offered a non tempered option for the back panel only. And that had to be special ordered. Because the glass was thicker. From what I gathered talking to them as well as some more knowledgeable people on here is that if the 55g is made from 1/4'' glass it is tempered.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------So OP just buy a peice of 1/4'' glass in the size you need. 48x12 in 1/4 will not be more than 50 bucks max. And a 48x21x12 tank will not hold 2 rays for long.

not planing on leaving them in it for long would b a cool tank and i have a 55g not with fish so idk its an idea..people i will not leave the rays in it once they hit around 8 inch max

Well, an easy way to test is to use polarized sunglasses and a laptop or cell phone with a white background on the lcd screen. Try viewing the lcd screen while wearing polarized sunglasses through the glass, if it's tempered it will go all wonky looking. Ie lines.

Well, that beats drilling and making a mess, huh?:ROFL::ROFL:

heh,

the reason it works is because most lcd screens are polarized. If you look at the screen from an angle it goes dark but if you look straight on it's bright and clear. If you place tempered glass inbetween you and the lcd screen while wearing polarized glasses it will distort the polarization of the screen. A lot of people say they can see the rainbow effect with their naked eye on tempered glass when they look at it from certain angles.. I don't know that I've ever been able to tell.
