So At the moment then I'm thinking:

1 x pair green terror
1 x Striped raphael cat
1 x green phantom pleco
maybe 6-10 rummynose tetras

or

same as above with a pair of salvini instead of the green terrors.

or

either of the above with 4 rams instead of the tetras.

or any of the above plus a dwarf pike cichlid.

Suggestions?

The salvinis will either eat or kill the rummynose tetras/rams. I dont have any experience with GT's but if they are mean as from what I've heard here then the tetras/rams don't stand a chance. If you want a schooling type of fish why not try giant danios?

It could be hit or miss with green terrors and small fish like tetras, but honestly they aren't as mean as people seem to think they are. However, one of my brother's male GTs is 10 inches. A 55 long is 48" long and only 12" wide, which might be a little cramped (especially with the 12" width,) for a fully grown male. Just my 2 cents. Not saying it wouldnt work, just saying it isn't ideal.

I wanted to try and stick with the new world theme which is why I'd go for tetras or rams over danios. Maybe colombian tetras then as they are a little bigger. And I'm not a big fan of silver dollars so they're out.

Colombian Tetras are good. Just make sure that you do research on your dithers before you buy them. Salvinis are mean as f#@k and will try to take on anything (from my experience). Try looking into rainbow fish.
