Best way to set up overflow?

Is it important to have just a trickle over the bio balls? Can they just be submerged? I guess that is not a wet dry but what is the benefit to wet dry?

Some people believe that the beneficial bacteria grow faster when more exposed to air with little water time. I myself like wet dry's more from personal experience. Canisters are nice for less noise but clog up with junk fast and are expensive. A wet dry system can last forever with little to no maintenance. IMO.
