I am either going to get a 55g (footprint=48"x13") or a 40g breeder (footprint=36"x18") for my room. My questions are, what would you suggest stocking and in which one?
Bigger is better.
I do like the extra (front to back)depth in the breeder tanks though looks more natural and is better for fish that want to setup a territory, figure out what you want to get then pick the tank
Well I kind of want SA/CA cichlids and maybe a catfish... but I'm more asking if you had and extra tank, which would you want (55 or 40) and what would you stock it with? Just to get some ideas churning in my head...
I have a 55 and a 40B, the 55 sucks... Go with a 75/90 or a 60, which is based off of the 30/40B. The issue with the 55 is that it is only 13" deep, if you have any animal over 5" it looks like its cramped. 55s are good for small tetras, nothing large. I had a friend with a 55 and 2 oscars, each over 8", and they grew arched backs because the skinny tank.
Unless you're planning on only keeping cons, firemouth, and the like.. Go with the 40 breeder. It actually has more base area than a 55 and most cichlids prefer length and width rather than height.
