55g Water Wont Stay Clear..New Filter!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I hate these HOB overflow filters.
That being said, those are getting clogged fast.
Upping your filtration is going to fix your water quality.
You don't LOOK that heaviliy stocked
How big is a 'Medium' fish?

Please tell me you're not using Play Sand

you can see from how popular HOB filters are on the site that they do exactly what theyre intended to so long as the proper size is bought. for that reason, I really doubt you're expensive filter cartridges are getting clogged so fast. I don't even use the commercial filter cartridges with my HOB just some floss and carbon/zeolite and ive never had an issue with water clarity.

You might wait for some other opinions b4 running out to by a new toy, but like i said b4 green water comes from one place. a UV sterilizer is available at just about any fish store, and the cost will depend on the size you get.

Yeah I know there's a lot of ya'll with em
They just *(* me off
he's already got the 2217 which should turn over the tank (5) times by itself
keep us posted

Just to be on the same side, i went and bought a UV Sterlization pump from Petsmart (AAUV9W) and got that in the tank now, plus went ahead and replaced my Penguin 350 Filters and swapped my tank lights with some ZooMed 10,000k bulbs. (Petsmarts were all out of the PowerGlo in the 18" setup like mine). The lights look much better, i compared them side by side, made a nice diff, ill post pics up later. Just want to see if the UV kit makes a diff.

its hard to tell from the pictures about the water color but it definitly looks green in the last few.

good luck with the uv sterilizer

Are you running the HOB with the e-2217? Dirty fishes for a HOB, isnt enough. The 2217 will make a world of wonder when its running in a week or two, also having MUCH more live plants will keep your tank water looking crystal.
Are those live plants btw? Live plants really help keep the water clear.

are you located in a city. I ask because if you are using city water it has chlorine in the water. this could be your culprit to fix this you might have to add some chlorine out when you do your water change. Like some of the others have said before you might have leaching going on in the water. I'm not 100% sure but isn't blasting sand made to break down. If so you might want to look into black pool filter sand. Alot of members my self included are using pool filter sand with great success. Another cheaper option to increase your filtration if you still feel yours is getting clogged and over worked to quickly would be sponge filters. this was alot to cover so ill let you think on it and try some things, but do let us know how the uv works out for you. I know it made my moms pond water crystal clear.
