i have kept a school of 5 RB in a 55 gallon now for about 2 years. They could use a larger tank, but seem to do fine for now.
Although I do have 3 adult Pygos in a 55gal temporarily, which has been going on longer than I hoped, I wouldn't recommend it. There however several species of Serrasalmus that would work in a 55 - small shoal of Maculatus or a solitary Spilo perhaps even a few other not so common species of Serras as solitaries also.
I think 5 is a bit too much, maybe 2

They have a bad rep, some people claim they'll kill everything. But dont be discouraged. I have them with several other fishes without any problems

dlobom, what are you keeping with your piranhas anyways? how big a tank? all i've seen you mention is a pleco, barely counts as "other fishes" imo
The problem with a 55g and most piranha is the width of the tank. Considering it only has a 12" width, there are a few serras that you could keep in that footprint although most people would recommend a 75g footprint for life for most piranha.
For instance i'll be keeping an elongatus piranha in a 40g long (same footprint as the 55g just slightly shorter) if he gets too long i may have to sell him or upgrade.

I would most def not keep a school of macs in a 55 due to their serra nature. No mind if they are small or not, they'll pick each other to death.
Likewise, dilobom, you should looking into picking up another Pygo in order to curb aggression. Usually if you have two, one will fight for dominance. If not, that is excellent it's working. Secondly, never, ever, ever keep anything with piranhas unless you are well aware it'll become a meal. Just because it works for a day, week, or even a couple months, does not mean it'll stay that way.
To the original poster: There are many species of serra that would do absolutely excellent in that tank.

Stay away from all rhoms, eventually it'll outgrow that tank, unless of course you plan on upgrading.
Piraya and Caribe will eventually get to big (even 3 in a 55)
Any other ones, you should be fine. Of course, you could always divide the tank and have two small spilos or something for now!

i had 5 RBP in a 55g for a bit, mostly as a growout, and everyday they were missing fins and chunks out of them. they have been in my 100g long for 6 months and not a single fish has been attacked since. your agression will be high just becuase they will always be in eachothers "territory" even though they are school fish, they will fight in a 55
