55gal oscar tank upgrade

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Svx, while filtration with good bio media capacity is important, water changes are more important. All the filtration in the world doesn't change that.

I've had my O for roughly a month (after i fully cycled the tank ) everyone talks about water changes, i know they are important! Yet i just tested the water today with the master kit- everything was perfect! :) i do loose a lot of h20 from evaporation, so i've been adding maybe 1/4 gal a day of fresh water... Still havent done a major wc, and everything still jives. Am i missing something or do some people over exaggerate the frequency of their wcs? (Ps im on clean well water- no chlorine or city chems)....

Members including myself just want you to be successful, some new members don't know about the importance of wc's.

Much appreciated! Thinking maybe cuz he's still small, not so much bio-load?.. Thanks for all the tips guys, looking forward to learning more and being a productive member of this forum! Night yall! :)

With just a 3" Oscar in the 55, the bio load won't be too bad, but within months, when they get almost football sized, that's when it would get crazy (in a 55g). In your new 125, not so much. A single adult Oscar in a 55g would likely require 2 large water changes a week to keep nitrate creep no more than 20ppm.

It depends on the species lower jaws are the largest group, upper jaws smallest group with the exception of a couple like the Ornate Bichir. Look into the lower jaw ones , and see what you like.:)
Update: was at the LFS today, and they had a (what i believe would be considered just a regular bichir polywampus) with just the two fish the oscar has been kinda "pokey" towards the new member of the tank.
1-Will this calm down as they adjust to each other, or should I add a third fish to calm down the dominance?
2- with the newly arriving 125, could i fit another oscar or similar w/o compromising cleanliness and safety of these fish?
3- Both currently are still babies, so I was thinking if I add my final fish, then transfer all at once to their final new home it would be like they adjusted early in life and may all get along?
4- will my aforementioned filter set up be enough if i do add said 2nd oscar?
Thanks for the help yall!

P.S. did a water change today as yall highly recommend, tested all parameters pre, and post. Water is great, healthy tank.

WC is everything with Oscars, or any fish for that matter, what are your nitrates running at before water change?
