55gal Stand and tank build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Finished putting the water in it. It took a little less than 11 5gals. Tank is about 55F right now. I turned on the filter and air pump but i am waiting to turn on the heater until it gets up to room temp. (save a watt when you can) Could i add media from another filter now or should i wait until it heats up? Will the BB die? About an hour ago i put in some food to get some ammonia in there. Hopefully there will be enough BB on the filter media to start a healthy colony quickly in the tank. It really looks great but i am not sure how clear it is because there is a lot of condensation on the sides making it near impossible to see in. Will post more pictures tonight if it heats up but so far it has only been doing about a degree an hour.

It will clear up over night for sure. Might as well turn the heater on. It's going to be running 24/7 so your really not doing yourself any favor having it off for a few hours.

I would move the previous filters media over when you move the fish over. The food in there isn't necessary.

looks good

Thanks, i am really excited. Anyone know the typical growth rate of Africans? I heard 1in a year and then i heard 1-2cm a month. Kind of a big difference. Thanks

all i can say is wow!! extremely nice job!

any reason you wen with fake plants instead of real though?
I may be mistaken but I believe plant aid in PH balance as well.

Yea, i don't think that i have enough light, it is 2 18in 15watt T8's. Could i use different lights in their with out replacing the fixture (just replacing the bulb) such as T5's? I have no knowledge/experience in lighting. I have always just used the stock lights. Its not to important to me tho so i don't want to spend alot of money on it. So if i can't just replace the bulbs to higher powered ones, i am perfectly content with these. The 3 Africans and the clown were transfered over today and they are happy and eating well. I plan on getting a few more Africans this weekend and maybe clown loaches if i can find them. I just transfered the pleco over and he was flipping out and swimming every where at first but now he has calmed down, any yes i did introduce him slowly. The tank is still a bit cloudy and it is not as clear as i would have liked it to be. Any suggestions?

I think you should have let the tank cycle a bit longer and added the fish slower, like in groups of 2. This will most likely be the cycle of the tank and that's why the water is cloudy. Keep your eyes on your amonnia nitrite and nitrate the next couple of days and if they get bad transfer the fish back over.

Tbh I wouldn't even do plants in your tank since you're going to have Africans in there.

The minimum light you want to have for plants is around 2 watts per gallon of t8's.
