55gallon oscar tank

A single oscar would be ok in there, although bigger would be better. I would avoid the balas as they can get over a foot long and are pretty fast swimmers, so they should have a tank more than 12-13" wide (young balas would be fine in there for a little while though).

If you went with a little bit smaller cichlid like a severum, there would be more options for tankmates-especially because severums have smaller mouths, so you could keep some of the larger (as in around 4" or so) tetras and barbs or smaller bottom dwellers like some cories with them while an oscar might be able to eat some of them

Kay, it's 15"deep x 15"tall x 48"wide. Camera does add a few pounds doesn't it? =P

Most on here assume 48x21x12.5" as a 55g tank. The added width/depth adds options though the tank is a little shallow.

After running the numbers its a 46g. With the added width I'd think an oscar would work nice as long as he has good water quality.

Ahh, interesting. Not typical tank dimensions? I'll be sure to add that detail next time around! Well it seems like I'm going down to Chinatown tomorrow to have lunch with family. I'll definitely take a look at the local fish stores there. Blood parrot and severum are at the top of my list. Thanks, guys for the hearty and quick replies!

looks like a 40 breeder. The added width is good for your oscar. I don't think i would put anything else with him though without a back up plan. There is alot you could keep in that tank. It looks really nice.

its a great looking tank! btw, that one inch per gallon isnt right.. alot of ppl misunderstand it. i would do an oscar and a really cool pleco-you could also go to a hobby store and get some long fake plastic plants (they are cheaper than buying them at a petstore-trust me!) and have them trail along the top of the tank.. an oscar would love that ...
