55gallon w a small african knifefish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have 2 and they never leave each others side.

lol..I am pretty excited about getting some senegal bichirs...hehe. They are so cute. And I also like my knifefish a lot too. My son named him ziggy. :)

Senegals, ropefish and leopard ctenopoma would work as interesting tankmates if you want to stick with an african theme. You could even do a school of larger congo tetras if you want more color/activity. African knives get along pretty well with most non-aggressive fish that are large enough not to get eaten. I've had one for years in a 120 with pristine water quality and it's never grown past 7", so I think yours will probably be fine in a 55.

I recently picked up 2 new ones and the guy at the lfs gave me a similar stupid warning about them growing to 3 feet and only eating feeders. I don't think he even knew they were from Africa.

I would go with a pair of ornate bircirs even though thats not exactly the most economical thing to do. And ya the max. in the wild for the African Knife is 12 in

I have a small african brown knifefish. He's really cute and friendly. Right now he is in a 55gallon all by himself. I know he will get bigger and I will get a him new tank in a couple of months. (after I move, I will get him a 90 or a 120 gallon tank)
What would anyone suggest I keep with him? I feel sorry for him being all by himself. Anyone else have a african brown knifefish? And what would you recommend I keep with him? Thank you in advance :)

I like the number 3. lol. I would get 3 silver dollars to shoal around and get 3 contrasting fish to go with it.

1 African Knife (grows 12 inches)

1 Senegal Bichir (grows 12 inches)

1 Angelfish (grows up to 12 inches tall and 6 inches long) OR red-tail shark (Grows up to 6-7 inches)

3 Silver Dollars (They grow to six inches)

55 Can hold these for life.
